Grouping

By admin | October 7, 2009

You can gather in groups of up to five with other players to quickly roll through quests or challenges that are too tough for a single player. Groups also provide a nice level of social interaction with other players.

XP Gains

Many times you’ll earn XP quicker in a group than solo. With a faster and higher kill count, the XP can really roll in. This depends on many things. You need to be working on green and yellow mobs, and the group should work together well.

If you’re in a group and find yourself spending a lot of time running back from the graveyard, then consider moving on. You may not be accomplishing much.

The No Life Method

If you really want to level, and have a friend or two to help, try this No Life leveling method:

1.    Get a healer and a DPS friend to agree to help you.
2.    DO NOT, repeat, do not group!
3.    Go to an area with a lot of green mobs.
4.    Run around and attack as many mobs as possible. Use an AOE attack if you have one.
5.    Your healer friend keeps you alive as, hopefully, six or seven mobs are beating on you.
6.    Kill the mobs.
7.    Your DPS friend also kills the mobs on you (they should be gray to the DPS player).
8.    Repeat this over and over.

Here’s how it works: you’re getting all the XP for the kills (which are coming in way faster than normal) your two friends aren’t getting any. So it’s a sacrifice on their part to help you out. In effect, this No Life method is grinding on steroids.

Monster Drop Quests

Many quests will require that you get x amounts of y from some mob. These quests can be frustrating. Sometimes the mobs stubbornly refuse to drop the y that you need. These are excellent group quests.

It’s almost like its programmed into the game. You have to kill about 100 of whatever mob before stuff starts dropping (of course, this isn’t always the case). If you are in a group, the kills come quicker and easier, and eventually every other kill will drop the quest item.

An Effective Group

Identify several “Elite” or grouping quests. Put together a well-balanced group (Tank, Healer, Range Striker). Now spend as much time with that group as you can completing as many of those quests as you can. Share quests, get theirs.

Example

You have a quest to kill Monster X. It is guarded by 10 hard mobs. It could take hours to solo through this quest. Try announcing to the region by typing:
/1 Is anyone doing the MonsterX quest?

The “/1″ broadcasts to the regional channel. Another way to do this is run to the quest location and see if players are lurking there (there usually will be some people like you, who want help with this thought quest). Now invite them to join your group. This usually works for putting together a group for the quest.

In the group you should see the XP gains accrue like the cost of gas as your pump it into your car. Make sure the people in your group are at least half-way competent. (Pulling correctly, cloth wearers staying back, healers doing their job, and so on.)

If the players in the group suck (that is, uncoordinated, not playing well, keep getting killed) just leave the group. Skip this quest, go to another one, and come back to this one. The fact that you could probably do a group quest in thirty minutes or so means you can jump around a little to find a competent group.

Loot Gains

Your gold count can really go up as you kill and loot monsters in a group. Humanoids usually drop coinage of some sort, while other mobs drop items.

If you have a gold need (such as for a mount, buying spells, or getting something from the Auction House) plan a group around humanoids, such as a Scarlet Monastery instance.

If you need some item or commodity, then research and discover what instance, mob, or dungeon it may be found at, then take or join a group going there.

Hints for the Maniac

Groups are a necessary evil. Sometimes you need them. Many times they’ll slow you down. Never waste time with a lame or incompetent group. Don’t even waste time arguing with them. If you’re not making progress, leave the group and go do something else.

Wipes (the entire group ending up dead) happen. But if it keeps happening, the group is over its head, or they don’t know what they’re doing.

Hints for the Player

Groups can be fun, and you can rack up gold and XP in a group. You may even meet a person or two worth adding to your friends list. In fact, some of the games most enjoyable moments come when you’re in a group.

There’s nothing like being on your mount, your group all around you, charging through hostile country as enemies besiege from every direction. It’s almost like living a movie!
